Fineweave Placemats

Introducing our product categories: Fineweave Sisal Baskets.

Our fineweave sisal baskets are unique baskets by traditional Taita weavers. The handrolled twine that these baskets are woven with is extra, extra thin.

ABOUT THE ARTISANS

Our placemats are woven by the same artisans that make the fineweave baskets. They use the same technique as making the bottom of a fineweave basket.

ABOUT THE PLACEMATS

These placemats are made out of extra thin sisal which is grown on farms belonging to the basket weavers. The Taita artisans pick the leaves of the sisal plant, decorticate them, and dye the fibres with natural dyes (from local trees, flowers and soil). Then they roll the twine on their lap.

Once all the twine of different colours is twined, they can start weaving a pair of placemats.

SIZES AND COLOURS

Order your placemat pairs in large (12 inch diameter) or X-Large (14 inch diameter) per colourgroups. The sisal for our natural collection is dyed by the artisans following traditional techniques.

For our colourful collection the sisal has been dyed at the 2024 Hadithi Dye Centre and supplied to the artisans. The placemat pairs come in a number of different colours and patterns, with each design made up by these artistic Taita artisans!

For other sizes and colours, reach out for a custom order or await our SS 2025 collection.
